The Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Optics and Precision Engineering IOF is exhibiting an ultra-lightweight metal mirror produced with the aid of additive manufacturing. By means of selective laser melting and the use of new materials, the carrier structures of such metal mirrors can be manufactured with 60% weight savings; with even comparable or better properties than conventional solids. This allows the use for space applications or fast moving scan systems.
